What buyers need to know
Specifying screws.
Screws move in volume: a single roofing manufacturer can consume a million tek screws a year, and a fabricator running purlins and cladding will burn through several drums a month. Buying them per box from a merchant is the most expensive way to do it. We quote by the thousand and by the keg, landed at your gate.
The critical variable on self-drilling screws is the drill point capacity against the steel thickness you are fixing into. A #2 point stops at about 2 mm; a #5 point will pull itself through 12 mm. Under-specifying burns the point out, wanders the hole and leaves an installer blaming your stock. We match the point number, the thread type and the length to the sandwich you are fixing before quoting.
Drive type matters for installation speed and stripping. Hex washer head is standard for roofing and cladding, Torx for high-torque and automated driving, phillips for light assembly and drywall. Coatings run from clear zinc for internal use through Class 3 and Class 4 for exposed African roof lines to full stainless 304 and 316 on coastal work.

Screws FAQs.
- Which drill point do I need for my steel thickness?
- A #2 point handles up to roughly 2 mm, #3 up to 4 mm, #4 up to 6 mm and #5 up to 12 mm of steel. If the point is too small it work-hardens and burns out before it breaks through; if it is too large the screw takes longer to seat. Tell us the purlin or sheet thickness and we specify it for you.
- What is a Class 3 or Class 4 coating?
- They are corrosion-resistance classes used for roofing fasteners, measured in salt-spray and Kesternich cycles. Class 3 suits most inland exposed roofing; Class 4 is specified within a few kilometres of the coast or in aggressive industrial atmospheres.
- Can screws be supplied colour-matched to roof sheeting?
- Yes. Painted heads are matched to the standard colour ranges used on African roof sheeting, or to a colour code you supply. Minimum quantities apply per colour because heads are painted in batches.
- Do you supply screws in kegs rather than boxes?
- Yes. Kegs and drums cut packaging cost significantly at volume and are the normal format for manufacturers. Boxed and labelled retail packing is available if you are reselling.
