What buyers need to know
Specifying threaded bar & studs.
Threaded bar is the most flexible item in a fastener package: cut it and you have a stud of any length, which is why services contractors, pipefitters and plant maintenance teams buy it by the bundle. We supply 1 m and 3 m lengths in grade 4.8, 8.8 and stainless, plain, zinc plated or hot-dip galvanised.
Hot-dip galvanising is the one place threaded bar needs care. The coating adds thickness to the thread, so nuts must be tapped oversize to run freely. We supply the matched oversize nuts with galvanised rod as standard — a detail that catches out buyers who source the rod and the nuts separately.
Stud bolts for flanged pipework are a different product with a different specification path: ASTM A193 B7 studs with A194 2H nuts for general and high-temperature service, B8/B8M stainless for corrosive duty, supplied cut to the flange table length with both ends chamfered. Send the flange schedule and rating and we return the stud lengths and quantities per joint.

Questions
Threaded bar & studs FAQs.
- Why won't standard nuts run onto hot-dip galvanised threaded rod?
- Galvanising deposits 45–85 microns of zinc on the thread flanks, so a standard nut binds. Nuts for galvanised rod are tapped oversize after coating. We supply them matched — if you buy rod and nuts from different sources you will find this out on site.
- What is the difference between threaded rod and a stud bolt?
- Threaded rod is a stock length you cut as needed. A stud bolt is a finished item cut to a specified length with chamfered ends, usually to ASTM A193 for flanged pipework, and supplied with matched heavy hex nuts.
- Can you cut studs to our lengths before shipping?
- Yes. Send a cutting schedule or a flange list and we cut, chamfer, kit with nuts and washers, and label each bag by joint or line number.
