What buyers need to know
Specifying anchors & fixings.
Anchors carry load into concrete and masonry, which means the substrate decides the product, not the price list. Cracked concrete, hollow block, old low-strength slabs and edge-distance limits each rule out different anchor types. Send us the substrate, the load and the edge distance and we will specify rather than guess.
Mechanical anchors — through bolts and sleeve anchors — are fast, immediately loadable and right for the majority of fixings into sound concrete. Chemical anchors come into their own at close edge distances, in hollow or damaged substrate, for deep embedment, and where an oversized or non-standard stud is being set. Resin systems ship with the studs, nuts and washers so the site receives a working kit rather than three part-orders.
Light fixings still matter at volume: nylon plugs, frame fixings, hammer-in fixings and drywall anchors move by the hundred thousand on housing and fit-out programmes, and consolidate neatly into the same container as the heavy line items.

Full-length sleeve, better in weaker concrete and block.
Drop-in anchors
Flush internally threaded socket for soffits and services.
Chemical anchor + stud
Resin bonded, best at edges and in hollow substrate.
Nylon and frame fixings
High-volume light fixing for masonry and boards.
Cast-in and foundation bolts
L-bolts and holding-down assemblies made to drawing.
Coating by exposure
Which finish for which African site.
- Internal concrete
- Zinc plated mechanical anchors are sufficient.
- External / exposed
- Hot-dip galvanised minimum, stainless where visible and coastal.
- Coastal or wet
- Stainless A4 (316) studs with vinylester or epoxy resin.
- Fire-rated or seismic
- Use an approved anchor with published data; tell us at enquiry.
Typical order sizes
What a real enquiry looks like.
- 5000 M12 galvanised through bolts for a warehouse racking install
- 120 cartridges of vinylester resin with A4 studs for coastal handrail fixing
- Container mix of nylon plugs and frame fixings for a housing programme
Questions
Anchors & fixings FAQs.
- When should I use a chemical anchor instead of a through bolt?
- Use chemical when the concrete is cracked, low strength or hollow, when you are fixing close to an edge or between anchors, when embedment must be deep, or when the stud size is non-standard. A through bolt expands and generates edge stress — chemical anchors bond instead of expanding.
- What anchor works in hollow block?
- Expansion anchors are unreliable in hollow block. Use a chemical anchor with a perforated sleeve, or a purpose-made cavity fixing sized to the wall thickness. Send us the block type and the load and we will specify it.
- Do you supply anchors with load data?
- Where the product carries published approvals or manufacturer load tables, yes, they ship with the enquiry response. Anchors without published data are quoted as general-purpose and should not be used in engineered connections.
- Can you supply holding-down bolts to drawing?
- Yes — L-bolts, J-bolts and holding-down assemblies with template plates are made to your drawing. See our specials and non-standard fasteners page.
