What buyers need to know
Specifying washers.
Washers are the line buyers forget until the site calls. They are cheap per piece and worthless when missing — a bolt package that lands without its washers stops the crew as effectively as one with no nuts. Every bolt quotation we issue includes the matched washer count so the shipment is complete.
Function drives the type. Flat washers spread load over soft or oversized-hole material. Hardened structural washers (to EN 14399-6 or ASTM F436) are mandatory under high-strength bolt heads and nuts because a soft washer bites in and loses pre-load. Spring and serrated washers resist loosening under vibration on plant and conveyors. Square taper washers correct the flange angle on channel and I-section steelwork.
Finish must match the bolt. A zinc plated washer under a hot-dip galvanised bolt becomes the sacrificial component and rusts first, staining the connection and worrying the client. We supply the washer in the same finish and the same standard as the fastener it serves.

Coating by exposure
Which finish for which African site.
- Match the bolt
- Same finish as the fastener or the washer corrodes first.
- Coastal
- Hot-dip galvanised or stainless A4; never plain steel.
- Galvanic separation
- Nylon and insulating washers where dissimilar metals meet.
- Vibration
- Serrated or wedge-lock in place of plain spring on plant.
Typical order sizes
What a real enquiry looks like.

Questions
Washers FAQs.
- Do I need a hardened washer under a grade 8.8 bolt?
- Under a pre-tensioned or high-strength connection, yes. A mild steel washer indents under the head and the joint loses pre-load. Hardened structural washers to EN 14399-6 or ASTM F436 are specified for exactly this reason.
- Should the washer finish match the bolt finish?
- Always. A plated washer paired with a hot-dip galvanised bolt corrodes preferentially and stains the connection. We supply matched finishes as standard.
- Can washers be pre-bagged with the bolts and nuts?
- Yes. Kitting bolt, nut and washer per assembly is one of our standard services and removes counting and sorting on site.
